Individuals who want to become professional fitness trainers have many opportunities available to them. There are vital steps those motivated enough have to take to become successful.
There are many areas of certification available for professional fitness trainers. The first thing to look for is if the organization will certify students nationally; that is, will they receive national recognition and accreditation upon completion of the course(s). This will come in handy for students who are uncertain where their careers will take them, ensuring that they will be able to obtain gainful employment virtually anywhere.
Students can begin to conduct their own research by reading industry magazines and seeing what programs the publications advertise, as well as which ones receive a lot of attention regularly, and which ones have good reputations. If a student has a particular club or gym in mind that he or she would like to work for, he or she can inquire with the establishment’s management as to what types of certification they require of their trainers.
Things for students to also consider when choosing a program is the overall cost, if there are any prerequisites to entering the program and what they are, and whether they offer classes and exams nearby or if they offer a home-study option.
Once an individual has the proper training and certification, there are many positions open to him or her. A professional fitness trainer can work as a personal trainer for a gym or club, or on his or her own, providing private one-on-one training to individual clients or groups. Personal trainers who work in gyms and clubs offer individualized expert advice to clients of the establishment. He or she works within the confines of the establishment’s rules and regulations, and works as an employee of that organization.
They enjoy a set workweek and a guaranteed rate of pay. A private trainer is self-employed, and thus enjoys the freedom of setting his or her own hours and rates, location of the training sessions, and number of clients. A private trainer is responsible for all of the items any other independent business owner is responsible for, such as proper insurance and other operating expenses. A newly certified personal trainer should look at what his or her goals are, what their monetary demands are, and what they need to do to get there.
The main responsibilities of a professional personal trainer, whether they work for an organization or are independent trainers, are the same. They need to be able to work closely with their clients to achieve their clients’ goals, whether they are weight loss, adapting to a healthier lifestyle, gaining muscle mass, or triathlon training. A trainer needs to be able to create a routine customized to their client and be able to articulate that plan to the client effectively so that both individuals can work together to get the client to where he or she wants to be.
A personal trainer has to be able to build their regimen to their client’s body, and be able to adapt those parameters as the client’s situation changes. They must be able to change the routine to make room for injuries and the body’s other responses to the changes being made. They need to be able to monitor the client’s progress and make appropriate responses to that progress. The more progress a client sees, the happier he or she will be with the trainer’s services, and the better off both people.
The salary a professional fitness trainer can expect to make varies depending on the trainer’s location. For example, trainers in small towns with less compact population can expect to make less than trainers who work in highly populated urban areas, because of fewer clients.
In addition, experience matters. Trainers with less than a year of experience can expect to make considerably less than trainers who have five or more years of experience, in the same geographic area. With that in mind, an average pay range for a professional fitness trainer with five to nine years of experience practicing in an urban area with a moderate population (150,000 or more) can expect to receive between $13.00 and $25.00 an hour.
