It is no secret that Americans are becoming fatter each day and are on the verge of an epidemic. Even young children are now falling into the obese category. Reality television, with shows like The Biggest Loser, has become very popular as people try to cope with their weight. In response to this demand, health and weight loss centers across the country have been established to help people lose weight.
The are some differences in the scope of activities between weight loss centers. There are those facilities and programs that involve themselves with weight loss through improvement of diet and nutrition and do not involve themselves with any kind of exercise program. Their approach is to have the participant lose weight by taking in fewer calories than are burned and by improving overall nutrition. Healthier foods that are not high in calorie content along with smaller portions are encouraged. Most of the weight loss centers do not offer exercise facilities or programs to go along with their diet regimen. Some are so emphatic on no exercise involved that they promote it in their advertisements.
There are, of course, a few exceptions. Some clubs offer a balanced approach that uses proper nutritional methods and incorporates exercise into the overall program. These clubs, however, are in the minority.
Types of Activities at Weight Loss Centers
For the centers that do not offer exercise programs, their activities are centered on the physical and behavioral parts of eating. Many people overeat due to psychological or behavioral reasons and these centers attack the problem and try to correct it. Prior to entering any program, a physician will check your physical condition to insure the safety of the client. The programs at the weight loss centers are physician directed and driven in order to insure maximum results and safety.
Weight loss centers will develop an individual profile for you that will include goals, lifestyle, and a weight loss plan exclusively for you. Then the plan will be broken down into components that are manageable and achievable.
Changing an individual’s metabolism is another activity that is offered at the weight loss centers. This will not only promote weight loss but will make keeping the weight off a lot easier. They claim that the program is so effective that an average person can lose 21 pounds in 4 weeks.
Perhaps the best activities that are provided are the structure and encouragement that is offered. Many people need this kind of atmosphere and positive reinforcement in order to be successful at losing weight. Weight loss centers provide this type of environment in order to facilitate the weight loss process.
Those weight loss gyms that offer both exercise and nutritional plans will try to incorporate the best features of each area and then to apply them to their particular programs. They may not be able to replicate the level of nutrition offered by the weight loss centers but they can make it up with the use of their exercise expertise.
Choosing the Correct Program
Choosing the correct program is not an easy endeavor because each individual has a different set of needs. Some people may be physically unable to perform even the lowest degree of exercise and must first lose significant weigh before they can start an exercise program. For others, a combination of weight loss and exercise is the perfect plan.
The best course of action is to consult a physician and determine the exact condition of your body. Follow the directions of the doctor and then evaluate each of the programs individually. Many have a free trial period so take advantage of those offers and find out which one fits you the best. Once a plan has been selected, dedicate yourself completely to the program.
